Character design based on ancient cultures

Character design based on ancient cultures

Create amazing characters taking elements from your own culture but adding a new twist!

About this course

Taking references from diverse mediums is key when coming up with new ideas for artworks, whether illustration, design or motion graphics. The realm of Character Design also benefits from reference gathering and reinterpretation. In this tutorial, I'll guide you on the way to create a brand new character, taking inspiration and references from ancient cultures. We'll not only work on the aesthetic part of the character, but we'll also give it some background and purpose.

What Project are we going to develop?

We are going to develop a brand new character, based on references taken from the ancient culture of your choice. I'll guide you through various steps, from selecting the appropriate references to creating a relevant color palette which reminds us of the culture from which the character originated.

Who’s this course for? Requirements

This tutorial will focus more on the character creation rather than on illustration techniques and tips, so some basic knowledge of the software is required. The software I'll be using is Photoshop CC 2015 but any previous version will work as well. For the illustration part, I'll be using a graphics tablet since I work free hand.
