Character Design: Create your own Mermaids

"Under the sea, under the sea, darling it's better, down where it's wetter…" If you know the lyrics I’m sure that you couldn’t help reading it as if you were singing the famous song of this well-known fantasy character. Do you want to learn to draw a mermaid? What about being inspired by other marine animals to create your imaginary creature? Join us in this course and you'll be more than ready to draw amazing mermaids. Are you in?

About the course

In this course, we'll be applying to our mermaids some basic concepts of anatomy. As you know, the union between two different species makes it necessary to adapt our characters' design to a different body. We'll be also working with a limited color palette and learning some tips on drawings and compositions in order to create mermaids which could  be perfectly used as concept art for videogames.

What project are we going to develop?

What we'll be doing is creating a mermaid basing ourselves on well-known aquarium fishes, it is, we'll be using their color palette. Our main task, then, will be picking up a fish and trying to find the best way to reflect its personality on our mermaid. After that, we're going to use the image we took as a reference to create the color palette. Once all this is done, we'll only need to do our best and add our fantastic illustration to our portfolio.

What you'll learn

  • Developing humans' and fishes' anatomy and learning different ways to represent a fish's tail.
  • The history behind mermaids' graphic references over time.
  • Coloring our drawing with different layers and filters.
  • Creating fantasy girls to represent your dream mermaid. ;)
