Illustration: Design a Set of Fictional Plants

Add some fantastical props to your own universe with this course, where you'll learn everything you need to illustrate a set of fictional plants inspired by the movie "Avatar".

About this course

In this course, I'll show you the step by step process for designing plants inspired by the popular movie, Avatar by James Cameron. Using plant descriptions from Pandora, the magical and fictional place where the movie is based, I will be sketching the plants from the concept to the finished color and show you my various techniques for doing this. I'll also show you how I take inspiration from real-world flora and fauna to use in my concept sketches and how you can apply the same to your own projects.

What project are we going to develop?

On the course, I'll focus on prop design, primarily on creating silhouettes and understanding shape languages. You can use these concepts to present in your own personal portfolio, or just to sketch for your love of the movie Avatar! This process will also teach you how to create visuals from your own imagination, without the aid of anything else. Learn how to design from scratch, a valuable skill that will help you through your concept art and illustration career.

In this class you will learn

  • How to research image references from the internet to help with your own plant designs
  • How to do draw four different kinds of plant species from Pandora: Herbivorous, Parasitic, Succulent and Carnivorous
  • How to paint from a rough sketch to a finished colored sketch
