Hello my name is Maria Keller and I'm a digital artist from Mexico. On this tutorial I'll teach you how to create a winter village in Adobe Illustrator. At the end of this tutorial you'll have created a cute little village and learn the process I follow when I create an illustration like this. All the keys and shortcuts are used will be displayed on screen so you can follow along Let's begin The first thing we're going to do is create a new document in Illustrator and to create the winter village we're going to be using a lot of the shaped so if you go here probably by the false you're gonna see this rectangle tool but did you click and hold it click you're going to see the rest of the shape those one thing that I like to do is release my click here on this little triangle so I can make this window float and move it near my camera so I can access them quickly zoom in on the canvas I press ctrl +, and to zoom out I press ctrl - and to move around the canvas I press the spacebar on my keyboard now let's begin working on our village the first thing we're going to create his house so we're going to select the shape that has no stroke and has her feel of and this one's going to be these blue and I have already selected my colors to save time but you can feel free to find colors that work for your village or the theme or illustration. So I'm going to click here on the rectangle tool or press my keyboard and make a rectangle that has a width of 192 and a height of 103 and I'm going to hit okay now the next thing I want to create a triangle so when I click here on this polygon tool and then click on this one and I really it really doesn't matter the radius, but you have to make sure that you have three sides and when you change the dimension actually here so you create that triangle you're going to go here and you can change your weight and your height and I'm going to change the width to have 192 and my hight to be 70. And now I want to align the shapes the to align the shapes and what is a line to a little window a line and this window should appear and i'm going to select both objects and then click again on this rectangle and as you can see there it has appeared an outline here on this shape so now this is a key object and another thing that you can see is that this icon has changed to a key so now this rectangle is a key object and want to align them to the horizontal line center and then here in the distributor space i'm going to make sure that I have 0 pixels and click your vertical distribute space so now they're sitting one on top of the other i'm going to change the color of this rectangle to this one and I'm going to go and select this triangle and go object path of the path and then I'm going to offset this 10 pixels but negative 10 pixels and I can have a little preview here and I want to hit OK. Now this one I wanted to have that lighter and blue + 1 x 2 like this big triangle again and go object path of the path and this one had one opposite 10 pixels and then hit ok now I want to make a copy of this other triangle that I had here so I'm going to selectt, cntrl C and then I want to paste in place or right in the same spot so you can go here to Edit>paste in place or press control shit be and now what I want to do is go to my direct selection tool or press A on my keyboard and go to this anchor point and just extend the line and then do the same one with the other side now I want to go here to window but finder because I'm going to use the pathfinder tools or you can press ctrl shift F9 on your keyboard I'm going to select the triangle that I originally created and this one that I extend that I'm going to select here on minus front and now I have a shape that is just strangle going to do that and I'm going to go to my direct selection tool or press a on my keyboard and select this anchor points and select this anchor points and then just round them all the way to the top and you can do that with the circle handles or you can input the value here on the corners top part now this one I wanted to make it white so if I do it like that right now you're not going to see it but you're not going to make sure that it's all right there you want to create an ellipse and this one is going to have a weight of 22 x 22 and then I want to select another one that is 30x30 and the big one I'm going to add this color and the smaller one I'm going to what is actually going to videos so I went to this to be on the center and as you can see the big one is on the front I want to go right click arrange centre back or shift control Open bracket and now it's on the back I'm gonna select both shapes may one the key and go horizontal line center and then vertical line center and then I'm going to place his window I'm going to grow it by pressing control G and put it here on this triangle and go ahead to their personal line center and then while a press shift so I can only move in one direction I want to put it right there in the middle now the next thing I want to create is the door or first let's work on the on the window so I'm going to make a rectangle here and I'm going to make this shape height of 40 and a width of 32 and then I'm going to click again on that one and create another rectangle that has a weight of 12 and a high of 50 then hit ok this one is going to have a darker color it's that is going to be actually the inside of the window so when I put this one around here and then make a copy while pressing all the shift and with a little bit here and then select part of them and press alt + shift this time the copies are going to be here on the bottom and I'm going to select all of this so all of them press ctrl G to group them then select all selected bigger rectangle and then go her to the align horizontal and vertical line and now you have your window I'm going to grow this one and move it around here and then make another copy on the other side and move it around there to make a copy again a press alt + shift while I'd right now when I group this windows by pressing ctrl G and then select again on this bigger rectangle and then go here on the horizontal line center to make sure that they are line horizontal I'm going to create some steps so I want to go here and make another rectangle and this one is going to have a width of 38 and hide the fate and is what I want to make it a darker gray then I want to make another one and this one is going to be 52 by eight now I want this step we share the same bottom so I'm going to select against the rectangle click again on that one and then click here on the vertical line bottom and then i'm going to actually align this to the horizontal line center source right there now want the distance between these two objects to be a hero so I select all the objects make one the key and go to distribute spacing 20 and align them with horizontal line center I'm going to make this bottom step a little bit lighter and then I'm going to create another rectangle to make the door now this rectangle I want to make it with a width of 38 and a high of 60 and I'm going to create another rectangle and this one I want to make it with a with a 55, sorry with a high of 55 and a width of 33 I'm going to hit okay now this one I want this to have this purple color and the other one wanted to share the same blue that we have been using so I'm gonna select these two objects align this again by making the step with the bottom one key no particular line center that's right horizontal line center and then vertical distribute space to be here and I'm going to select this door and this one again make one the object and align them and i'm going to create two smaller windows right there they want to select click here and make this little windows and we actually use the same dimensions that I just used so I'm going to go with a week of 12 and height of 15 and 18 now this is going to be a windows I want to get this darker blue color put in there well we can copy while pressing alt and shift group them and align them with the other window now finally I'm going to create an ellipse for their for the wind front door and someone is going to be 4 by 4 and i'm going to place it around here maybe a little bit to the top and give this darker gray now this is going to be our first house but to make a finishing so the finishing touches we're going to make some bricks and we're going to create a little rectangle and this one is going to have a width of 13 and height of 5 and then hit ok and this one what I wanted to share this blue color and I'm going to make a copy by pressing alt moving around I'm going to group up this one this group and move it around here and then I'm going to make another copy of this one but facing in the opposite direction direction so I'm going to go right click tra.. sorry transform reflect make sure they're reflecting on my vertical axis and hit copy now I have a copy of this and I'm going to place it around here with us we have our first building now the next, this is a house, but the next building that I want to create is a building so I'm gonna go here to rectangle tool and click and for this one want to create a rectangle with a width of 165 and a height of 273 and I'm going to hit OK to this when I'm going to give it this color and then I'm going to create another rectangle and this one I want it to be 102 by 10 and then hit OK and I want to round the corner again all the way to all the way and then I'm going to select both shapes click again on this rectangle tool and then go here to horizontal line center and then the this space is going to be here and this one actually going to be white and now I want to create a window so to create a window I'm going to go here to my rectangle tool or press my keyboard and create a window that has a width of 40 and a height of 63 and then I'm going to create another rectangle and this one is going to be 21 x 21 this one is going to be darker colors a window and then this when I went to like this orange color I'm going to select both shapes and align them the horizontal started the horizontal line center and then make another copy group both windows, select again that the bigger rectangle and go to a horizontal and vertical now you have the window I'm going to group it and make a copy while pressing alt and shift and then group this align them to the... sorry the horizontal line center and then were pressing Alt + Shift making a copy right there now I'm going to make another setp, so another rectangle and this one is going to be 62 by 8 and I'm going to make the door so I'm going to click here and make a rectangle witha width of 37 and height of 74 and I'm here ok now unlike the other ones I want to only round the top corners I'm going to go here to my direct selection tool press A on the keyboard and only select the top anchor points and then I want to run them all the way to the bottom or you can input the value of 80.5 and I'm going to make this door to be this color and then was select my object and go to object>path>offset path then I'm going to preview it and I think 10 is probably too much though probably six would work better someone here okay and make this one to have a the same color as the other windows and I want to make is the next thing we want to do is create some rectangles for the door so I'm going to make a rectangle that has a weight of 6 and height of 40 so I have to give the numbers so I'm going to make a rectangle this has a weight of 12 and height of 37. I'm going to place it here make it darker I feel like this one's fine but this one should be a little bit lighter and make a copy while pressing cntrl+shift group part of the shape and align them to the horizontal line center and I'm going to group all this door by selecting all the elements and pressing ctrl key and make the step share the same base by selecting both objects make that bigger rectangle the key object and got her to vertical line bottom and then select all of this again 0 resistance and align them to the horizontal align center now I want to select these bricks and while moving it I'm going to press alt to make a copy place one here and you cannot see them because they're on the back so I'm actually going to bring them to the front by right click arrange bring the front and then I'm going to do the same with this other bricks and again bring them to the front and I'm going to select all of this and go here next we're going to build our last building so I creative tangle click here and make a rectangle with a way the 130 and height of 150 by then hit ok now this one I want to hear wanted to be red and I'm going to make a triangle so I'm going to go to polygon tool and click again just as before and really didn't care don't care about the radios but I have to make sure that I have two sides I'm going to change the width and height of this triangle so we're going to be a 130 by 44 and I want to select part of them may want the key object horizontal line center and then distribute space and like you see. Now the next thing I'm going to do is something very similar to what we did on the roof here so I'm going to go object>path>offset path and then I'm going to offset this and pixels okay then I want to make a copy of this then I'm going to paste in place by calling object I'm sorry, edit paste in place and controls you be going to go to my direct selection tool press A on my keyboard and move this anchor point to extend my line and then move this other anchor point to extend my line and I'm going to select both shapes and go to pathfinder and select minus front I'm going to make this one white and just again as before I'm going to round this corners my anchor bolts now I don't need this to shapes to be separated so I want to select all of them and then I'm going to unite them your pathfinder so I can have a single shape the next thing I want to create is the window. To create the window I'm going to make a rectangle and this one is going to have a height of 52 so do and a width of 25 and hit okay and here's my window this one is going to be white I'm going to create the smaller squares and this ones are going to be 30.7 by 30.7 then hit ok. I'm going to change the color to one window move it around here then pressing Alt + Shift move it around here grab them and while pressing all and ship move it again here to the bottom then to make the exact same thing that I just didn't want to press ctrl D to repeat the last action that I did so I'm going to press control Ctrl G to group all the windows and then I'm going to select again the larger rectangle and align them and I'm going to group this window the window control key then replace one on here and then pressing Alt + Shift I'm going to make a copy here then I'm going to copy again what pressing Alt + Shift we can copy around here and I'm going to group all the windows were pressing Ctrl G select again my house shape and click again to make it the key object and then I'm going to go here to horizontal line center to make sure that there are aligned and I want to create little chimney so again a rectangle and this one's going to be 26 by 37 I'm going to select same red with my eyedropper and go arrange>centre back because it has to be in the back and finally went great another step I'm going to make another rectangle and this one is going to be 50x8 step and then I'm going to create the door, to create the door I'm going to make a a weight of 35 and a height of 69 ok and I'm going to make this one this purple color I'm going to find them finished rectangle that I did here and I'm going to give it the same gray give to this one so again I'm going to make sure both of these shapes share the same bottom I'm going to go to align vertical line bottom move this one around here working shift then more select both of the shapes align them and me sure my myspace is 0 now going to create a circle so I'm going to make the circle to be 28 x 28 have at this and then I only need half a circle so I'm going to go with my direct selection tool select this anchor point press delete then I want to select both this anchor points once on the bottom and I'm going to click on this icon this connect selected end points then I'm going to create a rectangle and this one is going to be 3 by 20 you know I'm just going to align the strip's make you want the key object and then while selecting both I'm going to go ahead 2-1 and now I'm going to align these two here and create and smaller ellipse this one is going to be 4 by 4 into the circle and I'm going to give it the darkest great that I have here solid there we go no again as before I'm going to copy these brakes and I'm going to put one here and remember to bring them to the front or range bring the front or ctrl shift close bracket and then I'm going to copy this one here and then this other one around here and now if you cannot see it because the one that I just copy is actually below and went to press ctrl why and with this I can see all the shapes us lines and I'm going to select the brakes and go right click arrange think the front and to go outside this again I'm going to press ctrl Y and I can see all my brakes now I select them all and change the color to this dark one and I want these breaks to be masks on the shape I want to select this one got it by pressing ctrl X then we'll select the shape and go here on this list like on that is called throw inside so as you can see around the shape you can see the dotted line and that means that now I can only throw inside the shape I'm going to paste in place by pressing ctrl shift and that's it and I want to select the other breaks and repeat the same control x to cut them select the shape and make the drawing side more active and to go outside you can click here on the train or more double-click and now we have our house I want to group this one and then I'm going to group my my building represent control jeep and finally when I grew up my house and I want to create a base for them so I'm going to go here and make another rectangle and this one is going to be 602 by 25 and I'm going to hit okay then I'm going to make this poor pole and I can change here instead of a line selection online to our part so I can align this rectangle that I just created and then put it right here going to move my house around places where I want them to be run and maybe the red one around here and then what I want to do is select this house like the baseline make sure that the distance between these 20 select the house elect the building click again and make sure that 0 and repeat the same process now I actually want the building to be behind the house I wanna go right click arrange the back and move this house around here me ok so that next we're going to right click some snow here for this space and work with my pen tool and click here and then take your again to make a line and I'm actually going to make this line and black for now just just you know what I'm going to do then I'm going to Effect>Disort and tranform and we're going to go to zig zag in a window with this should appear and if you hit here in the previous you can see what it's doing so rich per segment I want have 4 and I don't want them to be got that hides i'm going to change that size to 5 and I'm going to...I don't want this to be like on corners I want to change the smooth and I'm going to hit okay and you see here I can still see the original line because this is an effect that i just applied so to make this I 'm going to expand appearance then I would have actually align so we're going to my pen tool and go here to this last one and then go here and here and here to close my shape and I want to make these white so I'm gonna cut it again with ctrl X, cut, select my shape and going to the drawing side mode and ctrl shift B to paste it and we have a base now we're going to create some trees so I want to make a triangle again I don't care about the radios and I'm going to change the size of this one to 25x19 and then I'm going to select I'm gonna get this color and make two copies of this work and then another one and change this one to be 3 by 25 and then this other one I'm going to change this to 43 83 way to change the colors they look like they're behind and that's the last thing I'm going to arrange centre-back then arrange send back then this little bit to top to make sure that they have the same details I'm going to select everything make sure that I am aligning to my selection and then go here to practical distribute center now they are going to be separated by the same distance and I'm going to make the bottom part of making what one with a weight of six by 4 and going to change the color of this to this brown I want to send the back and make sure that part of this line and now actually want to move this here to the bottom so I can grab it and make sure that the distance between this group and the space that i just created 0 now I'm going to be great in some of the trees I want to go inside the group with double-click I'm going to cut this, sorry copy the shape pressing ctrl C go outside and go to paste in place and I want to move this while pressing shift around here and there were pressing Shift + Alt around here then around here maybe and then here then here and here I want to make some different three so we can make some simple triangles I'm gonna go here and make one that is this triangle and I want to change the dimensions to one that is 43 x 71 and I'm going to put it in here and I'm going to make a copy of this and this one I wanted to be 43 again but this time it's going to be a little bit smaller we're going to move it around here make sure that part of them online and then change the corner is one for this color and then make the other one from the other one soccer and i'm going to actually bring this one to the front range front this well with the top make sure that also is to arrange print the form so 3 is not behind and I'm going to make a rectangle and doesn't matter the size just around here i'm going to fill it with a white corner and then just as with it i'm gonna select ctrl X cut it select the shape go inside control shift to paste it again outside the drawing side bolt and then I'm going to go here again to the wrong side and paste it but this it's here I'm going to move it around here go outside the drawing side mode and then go I want to create some simple trees by making circles and I'm going to make one around what that is 45x45 and then we're going to create another circle is teach you by two and just waited with this triangles here we're gonna get this color and then the other one but it's going to be truly this is going to be small one this is going to be this I'm gonna bring this to the front by right-clicking bring to front and right click arrange window I'm going to give it this color and this one's going to have darker color and one thing that I want to do is just simply move this one and make a copy around here and just make this slider then again call it cntrl X go to this one go to the drawing side more cntrl+Shift+B paste it in our outside this and then again while moving I'm going to press alt to make a copy and I'm going to make this a little bit lighter cut it go to this one go inside contrition Peter based in place and going on we have some other trees finally we're going to create the trees with a rectangle and this rectangle is going to be thinking about 50 by seven okay I'm going round the corners all the way and then I'm going to make another rectangle actually it's going to be again without width 40 and this 17, and another one and this one is going to be 20 and just as before I'm going to round the corner and I'm going to make sure that they are aligned and that this one share this time 0 and this one wrong move it a little bit to the top so we consider and then we go now I'm going to select all the shapes go here to the pathfinder and unite them so they are only one shape make sure that this is aligned with the other part of the tree and then make a copy and align it to this tree and I'm going to make this a little bit darker and that's it and now do about that little detail from shade I'm going to make a rectangle and make it around here and then just simply select this one and make it a little bit lighter cut it, Ctrl X and select the shape look into the drawing inside mode control shift be to paste in place and when I make sure that to bring this to the front likely to change in the front and to the same that I just did with the other three with this 1i want to get the same green and then make it a little lighter Ctrl x and select my shape between draw inside mode Ctrl+Shift P that's really good aligne that and then we have our trees and now finally I'm going to group all this select everything and press Ctrl key and then I'm going to go here to my line options and make sure that I'm aligning into artboard and then I'm going to go horizontal align center and vertical align center I'm going to give you the background so I'm going to make a rectangle here and I'm going to send it to back again ctrl shift upper bracket and give it this great quarter and finally we're going to add some final touches with another rectangle and this one is going to be width of 50 and height probably 20 OK I want to round the corners make it white and be here and then make a copy of these and put my here and then another one here make sure that they're intersecting make another one here and another one here and another one here and again you can make sure by making this pace here and one thing that you can do is select this three anchor point and more than shit right all the anchor point so you can go inside this shape even though it's not a group select all these anchor points and over them which shift a little bit so it's a little bit longer and then move another one here and again you can double-click to just isolate the shape with your direct selection tool or press ENTER on your keyboard and make this one sorry with a little bit to the to the left and finally went to create two circles one that is going to be 37 and another one that's going to be 32, I'm going to hit okay then I'm going to place this circle here select both shapes go to my part finder tools and go- but and put them on around here and now all we have to do is just select everything and then push it again to select the background and group this one and then go again here make sure that your aligned into artboard and go horizontal line center and vertical and now you have your extension centered and it is you have completed your very own winter village I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial thank you very much for whatching!
