Books! Keepers of knowledge, adventures and different worlds, so let’s make them a little tribute!
Hi I'm Alba Zapata, and today I'm going to show you how to create some flat style library books just like this one. As always I've prepared a document that's 800 x 800 pixels with two layers; one for the background and one for our design. I've chosen a retro color palette for this design. Let's start by making the spine of one of our books. This is really simple, we just need the rectangle tool. We can decorate the books with different color bands and use the ellipse tool to make a label on the top. We'll make two concentric circles so we get a center with the border going around. To give it some shading, we'll draw a rectangle that covers half of the book. We'll fill it in black and give it a ten percent opacity. Let's copy this book and modify it to make a different color book that's a little bit thinner. Now, we're going to make another book but this time seen from the front edge. To do this we need to draw two open semi- circles, joining the loose anchor points. To make the pages, join the rectangles across the book. Select everything and in the Path- finder, select divide. Then we'll delete the bits we don't need. Let's change the color of the pages so some are lighter and some are darker. Group and lock what we have so far of this book. To make the cover for our book we need to draw two concentric circles in the same place as we did before. We'll leave the middle white and the border whatever color you want to cover to be. Repeat this process on the top, deleting the anchor point inside the circle. Now we just need to join them with the loose anchor points. We'll send the book's spine back and unlock everything. Group and duplicate to make the shading. Fill the shape in black, divide it with the Pathfinder and delete the excess bits. Then, we'll use the pathfinder again to unite. Split the silhouette in two and give it a ten percent opacity. Now, put it on top of the book. To make another book we'll duplicate this one, and we'll select only the top anchor points and raise them so we don't deform our shape. To decorate our book we'll draw another two semi-circles that we'll join to the anchor points we left open. For the shading we'll do exactly the same as we did before. Now to make a bookmark, we'll add an anchor point to our rectangle; slightly moving it up with the direct selection tool. To make more books we can duplicate the ones we already have, changing the shape and the color with the direct selection tool. Just be careful to not deform the circles. When all the books are done we can start to pile them up horizontally changing the size if necessary. Just remember that the shading should always be on the lower part. We'll write our title using the Bellas Neue font and align it to the center. You can use whatever size you like, however remember that when we change the size we shouldn't distort the text. And as a final touch, let's add the bookmarks between the pages of our books. And there we have it! Our flat style library is finished! I hope you enjoyed this
